In 1929, Martinus and Riet van der Valk founded their small excursion inn "De Gouden Leeuw" in Voorschoten (Holland). Initially, only lemonade and coffee were sold, but soon Riet started preparing pancakes and other delicacies for their hungry guests. The word of good food and drink at fair prices spread quickly, and soon the inn became too small and had to be expanded to include a café.

Meanwhile, a butcher shop was also founded, as the couple aimed to produce and market the products needed by their restaurants and later their hotels themselves. In 1939, when the street where the restaurant was located was widened, the excursion restaurant was demolished and a new building with 10 hotel rooms was built. Today, the group also includes furniture stores, furniture factories, kitchen suppliers, and travel agencies, among others.

When Martinus van der Valk passed away in 1969, there were already 16 hotels and restaurants in existence! The foundation for the family conglomerate was laid, as there was already a hotel or restaurant for each son and daughter of the large family. Over the years, grandchildren and great-grandchildren also joined the family conglomerate, which now includes more than 100 hotels and restaurants. Since its inception, each establishment has been managed by a family member, so it is not surprising that despite the enormous growth of the Van der Valk hotel chain, the personal and family atmosphere has been preserved.
